“Each One, Teach One” is a Wassmuth Center donor-funded program pairing a sponsor with a village girl to fund her school fees and living expenses necessary to complete high school. Research substantiates that the completion of secondary education not only improves a girl’s opportunity and ability to support herself, but also improves the prospects for her children – and therefore, improves the village. Participating students are high ability, low opportunity girls living in the villages surrounding Gorongosa National Park in Mozambique. Gorongosa National Park is perhaps Africa’s greatest wildlife restoration story.

“Each One, Teach One” began when a delegation traveling on one of the center’s annual Cultural Encounters retraced Nelson Mandela’s steps in South Africa, then spent several days in Gorongosa. Meeting the girls motivated the group to make a difference – and the sponsorships began. Since that initial encounter, we’ve returned to Gorongosa National Park with other delegations.

The program cost is $4,600 per person based on double occupancy, which includes lodging (2 nights in Johannesburg and 7 nights in Chitengo, Gorongosa National Park), breakfast, lunch and dinner daily, tours and activities, in-country transportation, international transportation between Johannesburg, South Africa and Beira, Mozambique, and guides. The program cost does not include the international airfare to Johannesburg, South Africa, travel insurance, passport and visa, single occupancy lodging or gratuities.
The deposit and registration deadline is April 12, 2024. Included in the total cost of the travel program, a $750 non-refundable deposit is a tax-deductible donation to the Wassmuth Center for Human Rights.

Gorongosa Coffee is a large-scale agroforestry initiative with enduring socio-economic and environmental benefits. This Mozambican based project is being implemented on Mount Gorongosa, designated as part of Gorongosa National Park due to the rich endemism and critical hydrologic function for the Greater Gorongosa Landscape. The mountain is covered in a tropical rainforest; a rainforest that once extended across the continent, supporting an explosion of wildlife. Gorongosa Coffee is currently working with a thousand families living on the Mountain with plans to reach three times that number living on the mountain; all endorsing a common vision of the integrated relationship between sustainable land use, community development, and biodiversity.
