    The Art of Human Rights

Currently in construction, the new Wassmuth Education Center will be a one-of-a-kind human rights education center built within the footprint of a one-of-a-kind human rights memorial. Core to the Center’s mission to promote respect for human dignity and diversity through education, art plays a dynamic role in supporting teaching and learning about and for human rights.  Art can provide a visual designed to engage viewers in reflection, discussion, and action.

Slated to open in June 2024, a permanent collection of over 21 art pieces* will present core themes and concepts in the Center’s work.  The pieces include: a glass mobile of 500 wings taking “Conscious Flight,” a sculpture in tribute to the late Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg on “Transcendental Justice, a mosaic portraying the power of education to break through the darkness, a six-foot “popsicle sun” inspired by one child’s commitment to “be the light,” a series depicting hope, compassion, diversity, inclusion and respect, and a piece honoring the upstanders who make a difference in the lives of others.

The public is invited to learn more about how art and technology will be showcased in the Philip E. Batt Building housing the Wassmuth Center for Human Rights.

Refreshments will be provided by Neckar Coffee and the Wassmuth Center Event Committee. Families are welcome to attend with activities planned in the Marilyn Shuler Classroom for Human Rights for children.
